To the neophyte, why do we call the toilet the “Head”? Well in the early days, the place for sailors to relieve themselves was at the bow of the boat on either side if the figure-head at the front of the boat (mermaid or whatever!)…so that’s for the head! Why was toilet located at the front? Because, remember this is from the old squared riggers day, where the wind blew from the back of the boat (downwind)…therefore…well you get the picture…stuff would not fall on the boat as is commonly expected. Phew! So much useless crap (pun intended)that I carry!
Please don’t install on the dock!
First the actual toilet.
The favorite topic of conversation it seems tor live-aboards, the actual toilet.
The technology has really advanced on the disposal of human waste. For all the poop on poop..I can be so corny – I’m holding back – got so many coming to my head :-) I recommend reading these two articles: here and here. There are today so many options, and the most important ones are well discussed in the above articles. Note: not noted in the articles, porta pottis are illegal in Canada and many parts of the US (silly really). I am presuming the reason they are illegal is because bad users were probably dumping overboard. However, the good ole bucket and chuck-it overboard affair is still legal. Go figure!
Our requirements are simple right now, one toilet, not sure of the type yet. I suspect we will use mostly the facilities at the marina until I am comfortable with the operating and servicing of the said toilet.. Many trawlers have 2, that seems overkill and too much messy maintenance. I think if I get a boat with 2 heads, I will turn one into a full shower instead, Which brings me to
Shower:
We both like to showers daily. As mentioned above, we expect to use the marina facilities, but do want the option onboard including hot water. Not sure, if it will be on-demand (propane, etc), or with a hot water tank, more investigation in an upcoming post.
Fair winds!
