How to select a Trawler: hull shapes: 1) Planing

This is as much for me as it is for my readers (fictitious!), I am starting a series of post about my selection criteria about choosing the right trawler for our needs.  This of course, probably will not be the same as your needs, but I will try to cover options.

Lets start with the exterior, the actual hull shape of the trawler. There are basically three hull shapes.

  1. Planing
  2. Semi-Displacement
  3. Full Displacement

Planing

Missing a few chicks on board, but otherwise sexy

This hull shape is designed so that the boat rides on top of the water beyond hull speed. This type of hull is really suited for high speed and performance.  Think of the cigarette boats. If you are a cruiser (which this blog is obviously about) this hull is great if you do not have to time to get to destinations...and have gobs of cash to burn. And I mean literally burn because fuel consumption is considerable, even when moving slow, for wake zones and such. 45-80 GPH is easy to do and common.

Unfortunately the front pages of magazines are usually graced with these boats, as they are considered "sexy"!

For us, this is a no go, so I will not even cover boats of these hull shapes.
