How to select a Trawler: hull shapes: 2) Semi-Displacement

Continuing the series on hull shapes.

Semi-Displacement

Basically a semi-displacement (also called semi-planing) are hulls that are rounded at the bow (front) and a flatter/square section at the stern (back) of the boat. This gives increase storage capacity and potential faster speed.

In reality, most cruisers want a single engine...There really isnt any good reason for dual engine, unless you like to spend double on everything. If you are not sure, do read Single Or Twin Engines - Which Is Best? I see no reason for twin engines. With a single engines, that theoretical faster speed is not much more than 12 knots.

It is dangerous to generalize, but I will anyways! In general, a semi displacement trawler is great for coastal cruising and inland waterways.  Great care should be taken in rough weather and oceans. Quartering waves could be dangerous if they are coming at you faster than the boat traveling, which is not hard to achieve in a slow trawler.

Most trawlers for cruising fall into this category, and this probably what we will end-up with, as we do not intend to perform larger crossing than from Florida to Bahamas (yet!)
