Boat and security

Two weeks ago, our house got broken into. There were two cars in the driveway, and we were at home.  The question was whether the thief was stupid or ballsy. It turns out it was the first one as he got caught later on shoplifting with my stuff on him too.

Timeless classic, if I didnt read it 10 times, I never read it!

Anyways, my wife said "this would not happen on a boat in a marina". Yes and no, generally a marina is locked and secure, its also easier to feel and hear someone coming on board.

This made me think about theft prevention on a boat...But the first thought that came was for the Joshua Slocum story of using carpet tacks on the deck for would be theft. He used them, and they worked at least for one occasion if I remember.

Everyone should read the story of Joshua Slocum - Sailing Around The World Alone. And in this day and age, it is public domain and very available online.

Back to security on boats, some options:
  • A dog, like at home, at least will warn you
  • Boat security systems do exists similar to home systems
  • Neighborhood watch, probably letting your neighbours know you will not be around for a period and asking them to watch is also great. People in marinas tend to do that anyways.
Some other steps , are preventive in nature and they will also help:
  • Keep a detailed inventory of what is on board, and where it is! This is more that just for theft, also helpful for you to know, as it difficult to know in which cranny things are stored.
  • Take a picture of your valuables (for insurance purpose). Filming is a good way to show inventory as well.
  • Obviously, secure your valuables (electronics etc as well). I had GPS years ago walk from my car...duh!

 Fair winds!
